Sovello – Top 15 PV-Manufacturer combines all production steps under one roof Sovello AG is an producer of solar wafers, solar cells and solar modules. The integrated production differentiates Sovello from most of the other companies in the solar market, which tend to specialize in the production of either wafers or cells or modules. Based on a patented, proprietary process, Sovello produces STRING RIBBON™ wafers consisting of polycrystalline silicon, produced in final size. By producing STRING RIBBON™ wafers, Sovello spends 50 per cent less consumption of silicon and energy compared to common casting processes. Currently, Sovello operates two production plants in Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The first plant, SV1, started production in June 2006. In June 2007, after just one year of construction, the second production facility, SV2, came online. With this second plant, Sovello´s technical production capacity reached about 100 Megawattpeak (MWp). The construction of a third production facility, SV3, is currently underway on the company grounds in Bitterfeld-Wolfen, the so-called Solar Valley of Germany. This plant will increase the technical capacity by about 80 MWp. Starting in Q1 2009, Sovello will also produce String Ribbon™ solar wafers, cells and modules in this plant. Altogether, Sovello is investing about 150 Million Euro in building this new facility. The company is a joint venture of three equally vested, publicly traded global market leaders in the solar industry: Q-Cells SE (Germany), Evergreen Solar, Inc. (USA) and REC ASA (Norway). Each of these companies holds a 33.33 percent share in Sovello AG. Today, just 4 years since its inception, Sovello AG has about 1.100 employees generating revenues of about 219 Million Euro in fiscal year 2008. * STRING RIBBON is a brand of Evergeen Solar, Inc. Evegreen Solar’s wafer manufacturing process is patent protected in the USA and other countries.
