Glass Industry News

AGP E-Glass Co., a specialty glass manufacturer for the automotive industry, has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy with $4.6 million in liabilities.

, AGP Group

The company, a subsidiary of Belgium-based AGP Group, established its North American Tech Center in Canton Township, Michigan, three years ago. On November 14, AGP filed a voluntary petition for bankruptcy in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, beginning the process of liquidating approximately $2.8 million in assets. According to court documents, over $2 million of these assets consist of machinery, equipment, and vehicles.

According to AGP’s website, the company offers "tailor-made and state-of-the-art complex glazing solutions for autonomous and electric vehicles, enabling a unique in-cabin experience." AGP entered Michigan aiming to integrate into the growing electric and autonomous vehicle market, as highlighted in a 2021 press release from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC).

At the time, AGP had planned to invest between $11 million and $15 million, creating 71 new "high-wage" jobs in addition to its existing 31 employees in Michigan. The MEDC awarded AGP a $550,000 performance-based grant.

The announcement stated:
"The project will continue to grow Michigan’s mobility and electric vehicle sectors and will further underscore the state’s leadership position in mobility and automotive R&D."

However, MEDC spokesman Otie McKinley confirmed that no funds were ultimately distributed to AGP, as the agreement was terminated.

Since then, the transition toward electric and autonomous vehicles has significantly slowed, causing financial strain across the automotive industry. AGP’s bankruptcy filing does not explain the reasons behind the liquidation.

Attempts to contact AGP representatives for comment were unsuccessful. Tamar Dolcourt, an attorney from Foley & Lardner LLP representing AGP in the bankruptcy proceedings, also did not respond to a request for comment.

Financial records included in the filing show that AGP E-Glass generated $16.2 million in revenue up to its mid-November bankruptcy filing in 2024, compared to $20.2 million the previous year — a nearly 30% increase from the year before. Around $1.4 million of this year’s revenue came from asset sales and subleasing its Canton Township facility.

AGP E-Glass is currently facing several lawsuits in California Superior Court, including allegations of wrongful termination, unpaid wages, and racial discrimination. There is also a pending employment class action.

The company, led by President Carmelo Mattioli, has over 100 unsecured creditors. The largest are German manufacturer Buhler Group, owed $2 million, and AGP Peru, owed $1 million.

Among Michigan creditors, AGP owes $77,859 to Novi-based real estate firm Hillside, $74,373 to Taylor-based building equipment contractor Tem Asure Inc., and $30,352 to Detroit-based DTE Energy Co. Additionally, it owes approximately $88,000 to Shelby Township-based Vail Haggerty LLC for unpaid rent and professional services related to its Canton Township facility at 41600 Haggerty Circle.
