The new sports center at the University of Strasbourg generates its own energy from its roof

, Onyx Solar

The new University Sports Centre of Strasbourg (Centre Sportif Universitaire de Strasbourg), in France, has integrated photovoltaic glass into its skylight, in a project developed by Onyx Solar together with VELUX. The building, designed under criteria of architectural quality and energy efficiency, turns its roof into a surface that generates energy while, at the same time, letting natural light through into the interior.

The solution, designed specifically for the project, is made up of 50 crystalline silicon (c-Si) units adapted to the geometry of the skylight. Each unit delivers a nominal peak power of 418 Wp and keeps a level of transparency that lets light through.

For a sports centre, where the facilities are used daily and for many hours, having a roof that produces part of the energy it consumes is a direct way to improve efficiency without compromising the design.

The Strasbourg project reflects a wider shift, one in which solar energy is no longer placed on top of buildings but built into them. That is where Onyx Solar focuses: turning façades, roofs and skylights into surfaces that generate energy, with photovoltaic glass adapted to the shape and requirements of each project.
