SGD Pharma Highlights New Steps Toward Lower Impact Glass Packaging

, SGD Pharma

SGD Pharma is continuing to expand its sustainable packaging efforts, with a focus on increasing recycled content and reducing the environmental footprint of glass production for the beauty and pharmaceutical sectors. At Paris Packaging Week in February, the company presented new glass bottles containing 20 percent and 30 percent post consumer recycled glass. These products are manufactured at its Zhanjiang facility in China, where the use of PCR glass helps cut demand for virgin raw materials and lower energy consumption. The same plant became the first in China in 2025 to receive ISO 14021 certification for PCR glass packaging, marking an important step for certified recycled glass production in the cosmetics market.

The company is also pushing forward with lightweight and reusable packaging formats. Its Nova bottle range is designed to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 20 percent compared with standard designs, using optimized glass distribution to lower weight without compromising appearance or structural performance. SGD Pharma has also developed the refillable Eclipse glass jar, which is intended to support repeated use and reduce single use packaging waste by making capsule replacement easier for consumers.

These developments fit into a broader sustainability strategy that has again earned SGD Pharma a Platinum EcoVadis rating, this time with a score of 90. The company says it remains on track with its Science Based Targets initiative roadmap, aiming to cut carbon emissions by 42 percent by 2030 and by 65 percent by 2040, using 2022 as the baseline year.
