Each year the Phoenix Award Committee selects a living person who has been active in and has made significant and major contributions to any phase of the glass industry.

This may be in the field of science, production, or education relating to glass and shall include glass containers, fibreglass, flat glass, scientific glass, tableware, and electronic glass.

On Friday October 17th, 2025, Mr. Demetrius Rankin, Chairperson of Phoenix Award Committee presented the 53rd Phoenix Award to Mr. Carlos Moreira da Silva at a black–tie Gala dinner at the historic Casa Ferreirinha in Porto, Portugal, a renowned Port Wine cellar that offered a fitting and elegant backdrop for the celebration.

Mr. Carlos Moreira da Silva, former CEO and Chairman of BA Glass as well as Founder and Executive & Advisory Board Director of TEAK Capital, has been selected as the 53rd recipient of the Phoenix Award and “Glass Person of the Year 2025”. This distinguished global award recognizes outstanding contributions to the international glass industry. Mr. Carlos Moreira da Silva is a visionary industrial leader and a key architect of BA Glass’s transformation into the world’s fourth-largest glass container manufacturer. The award celebrates Mr. Moreira da Silva’s lifetime of accomplishments, unwavering commitment to responsible leadership, sustainable industry practices, and community involvement. Today, BA Glass stands as a model of sustainable industry, investing heavily in decarbonization and innovation. The company’s culture, deeply influenced by Mr. Moreira da Silva’s values, prioritizes employee well-being and environmental responsibility. He is widely acknowledged as principal authority within the industry.

The Committee organized a Banquet in Porto’s Casa Ferreirinha Wine Cellar early October this year to present the prestigious Crystal Phoenix Bird Sculpture to Mr. Carlos Moreira da Silva. The Award was given to Mr. Moreira da Silva by Phoenix Award Chairperson Mr. Demetrius Rankin in the presence of more than 130 guests including Mr. Moreira da Silva’s family, colleagues, representatives from the Portuguese political and governmental spheres, partners, Phoenix Award Committee members and past Chairpersons coming from Portugal and far distances like, Thailand, China, USA and across many European countries.

The 2022 recipient Dr. Li Shenhua, founder of Huaxing Glass, who had travelled from China, the recipient of 2019 Award Prof. Dr. Alicia Durán, the 2018 Award recipient, Mr Oliver Wiegand, the 2015 Award recipient Mr Surasak Decharin – former CEO of Bangkok Glass, Thailand and the 1999 recipient Dr. Alev Yaraman, formerly of Sisecam and former ICG president also joined the Banquet to honour Mr. Moreira da Silva. Mr. Moreira da Silva’s legacy continues through his son, Tiago Moreira da Silva, now leading BA Glass, reinforcing a tradition of excellence and innovation in glass manufacturing. In his heartfelt acceptance speech, Mr. Moreira da Silva expressed sincere gratitude to the Phoenix Award Committee, and paid tribute to his colleagues, family, and friends for their unwavering support throughout his journey. Mr. Moreira da Silva stated, “I’m very proud and honoured to be a recipient of the Phoenix Award”. He also expressed his thanks and happiness in receiving the Award in his beloved City of Porto and for the presentation speeches which he said were moving for his family and for himself.
