Glass manufacturer Saint-Gobain will close its plant in Herzogenrath at the end of the year. 125 employees will lose their jobs.

The corporate headquarters in Paris communicated the official decision to the city of Herzogenrath on Wednesday. Mayor Benjamin Fadavian informed the public shortly thereafter via his social media channels.

Reason: crisis in the automotive industry

The company cites lower demand for automotive glass against the backdrop of the crisis in the automotive industry as the reason for the closure. The company Sekurit, which also manufactures in Herzogenrath, is not affected. 

Social plan for employees

According to its own statements, the city wants to work to ensure that there is a fair social plan for the employees. In recent years, Saint-Gobain in Herzogenrath had attempted to convert the glass tank to hydrogen. Without success.
