British Glass CEO Dave Dalton said these have been the most difficult times he has ever encountered in the glass industry.
Mr Dalton said the organisation would have to look at the state of the industry, the nation, and the planet to understand what needs to be done.
He said: “[British Glass] strives to ensure this industry survives through really difficult times, and these are the most difficult times I've ever encountered.
“I recall about three years ago, standing on a similar stage, I said how I had been proud to represent an industry that, over my years of involvement, had not shrunk compared to other heavy industries, where you see massive reductions in numbers.
“I wish I had not opened my mouth because here we are, three years later, staring down that barrel.”
Mr Dalton spoke at the Glass Focus Awards held in Manchester, UK, last week.
He thanked those who had supported British Glass, including those who had assisted with its lobbying of the UK Government.
Dean Butler, British Glass President, said the organisation had been to the UK Houses of Parliament approximately 20 times this year.
He highlighted that British Glass had been fighting against issues such as net zero, climate change, energy, and policies enabling imported goods to the UK.
Mr Dalton continued: “We have many issues around the economy, the investment in energy-intensive and manufacturing industries, and we are a typical sector in the middle of that malaise where we have to find a way through.
“But we have got some fantastic people and capability, and though we will have to react to the circumstances, I think we will find a way through this, because this industry deserves that.”
He concluded: “Historically, the UK spirit, in terms of austerity, has been to batten down and fight its way through, and come out the other side stronger for the journey.
“I truly hope the glass industry manages to do that.”
