AGC Zeebrugge celebrates 100 years of glass innovation and 50 years of Seapane

, AGC

A historic milestone for the glass industry in the region, with a focus on a sustainable future.

On September 18, 2025, the AGC site in Zeebrugge (Belgium) was the scene of a double celebration. With 100 years of glass production and the 50th anniversary of the double-glazing activity AGC Seapane, an impressive history of innovation and local craftsmanship was honored. The celebration took place in the presence of the governor of West Flanders, Carl Decaluwé, and the mayor of Bruges, Dirk De fauw, who emphasized the importance of the factory as a cornerstone of the regional economy. The site, which today employs 197 people, has grown into a global player in mirror production and a specialist in high-performance glass.

A century of innovation: from window glass to sustainable mirrors

The story of AGC Zeebrugge is one of continuous transformation. Starting in 1925 with the production of window glass, the factory successfully switched to glass processing in 1975. This marked the start of the production of sealed double-glazing units under the iconic Thermobel range, a revolution in the Benelux.
Just two years later, in 1977, the site added a new specialization: the production of mirrors. A decisive step that culminated in 1987 with the installation of one of the most productive mirror lines in the world, putting Zeebrugge on the map as a global leader. The drive for innovation did not stop there. Ten years later, the factory expanded with a line for painted glass (Lacobel and Matelac), responding to the growing demand for aesthetic interior solutions.
An absolute milestone was the world premiere in 1995: the launch of an environmentally friendly, copper-free mirror of higher quality with a lifespan three times longer than a traditional mirror. AGC Zeebrugge continued to confirm this focus on sustainability by becoming active in the production of flat solar mirrors in 2011 and very recently in 2025 with the introduction of Mirox 4Green+, a high-quality mirror with a water-based protective coating.

AGC Fabrication Belgium, Seapane: 50 years of expertise in high-performance glass

In addition to mirror production, AGC Seapane is celebrating its golden jubilee. For 50 years, it has been the specialist in high-performance glass for both the residential and project markets. Today's Thermobel glazing is much more than just insulating; it offers a total solution that meets the strictest requirements for solar control, acoustics, safety and design. With the production of double and triple glazing, the site makes a crucial contribution to energy-efficient and comfortable buildings.

Safety and craftsmanship as a foundation

The success of the site is based not only on technological innovation but also on its people. AGC Zeebrugge is known within the group for its excellent safety culture. It is the daily commitment and safety awareness of every employee that ensure the workplace is and remains a safe environment.

“Congratulations to all those who have contributed to AGC's glass activities in Zeebrugge over the years. Looking back over the past 100 years, innovation and Zeebrugge have always been synonymous” concludes Davide Cappellino, President Architectural Glass Europe & Americas at AGC.
