Decarbonization in Glass
O2 gas emissions are released as a result of melting glass, typically from burning natural gas in the glass melting furnace or when additions, such as limestone and soda ash decompose upon heating. With over 80 years of experience in glass production, we can help you get on the path towards decarbonizing your glass melting process.
Waste Heat Recovery
Linde's technology for the glass industry optimizes energy efficiency, improves quality, and enhances environmental performance. The OPTIMELT™ system for waste heat recovery is designed to significantly reduce energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions compared to air regenerative and oxy-fuel furnaces.
The result is the conversion of fuel to hot syngas – delivering a net reduction in fuel required to melt glass by up to 20% to 30% compared to oxy-fuel and air-fuel glass furnaces, respectively.
Low-Carbon Fuels
In glass production, the carbon intensity can be reduced by replacing fossil fuels, such as natural gas, with hydrogen produced from renewable feedstock or carbon-free power. Different levels of hydrogen enrichment of natural gas (HENG) streams will help identify the operational variations, efficiencies, and emissions output of the application at various fuel blend levels. The blend will have lower CO2 emissions than natural gas alone and generate the same amount of heat.
Oxy-fuel Combustion
We supply gases and application technologies for all oxy-fuel melting furnaces. We offer a diverse set of oxygen-based options to increase pull rate, extend furnace campaign, reduce NOx emissions of air-fuel furnaces of all types – sideport, endport and recuperative.
The OPTIFLO2™ VPSA system and the OPTIFIRE™ wide flame burner are Linde's integrated oxygen offering for oxy-fuel furnaces. The result is the conversion of fuel to hot syngas – delivering a net reduction in fuel required to melt glass by up to 20% to 30% compared to oxy-fuel and air-fuel glass furnace, respectively.
