Shelf robot has unprecedented reach

ABB, the global power and automation technologies group, introduces the Shelf Robot (IRB 6650S), a unique robot with unprecedented reach and working envelope, which is perfect for mounting in elevated positions to maximise cell workspace, and is ideal for use in congested work areas. The new robot features a hybrid, modular design, including the very best characteristics of the existing IRB 6600 and IRB 7600 models. The ´best in class´ working envelope offers new possibilities for utilising robot based automation in applications such as press tending, die casting, injection moulding, materials handling and spot welding. The ´shelf´ configuration is particularly useful in press tending applications where space in and around the press tool area is often extremely confined. With the IRB 6650S, large grippers and press parts can be smoothly retracted from the press without the risk of obstruction or collision, and the area below the robot is perfect for tool storage and tool changing operations. Additionally, the exceptional wrist torque, speed and acceleration performance of the IRB 6650S make it ideal for handling bulky parts, such as complete car body sides. The IRB 6650S is equally effective on injection moulding applications and is especially suited for tending large injection moulding machines over 10MN - providing effective, efficient and speedy control of post process tasks such as flaming, packing, sprue cutting, tape dispensing and assembly operations. In die casting applications, the exceptional working envelope ensures easy access for die spraying as well as part handling, while the foundry version provides IP67 protection of the entire robot. The flexibility of the IRB 6650S can also help increase throughput in automotive spot welding applications where the efficient use of space within car body framing stations can be made by introducing multiple robots positioned at different levels. Typically, standard robots can be installed at floor level to perform welding operations on the lower part of the car body, while ´Shelf´ robots are mounted at 2m above floor level to carry out welding operations on the upper part of the car body. The IRB 6650S is part of ´The Power Generation´ of custom-configured six-axis industrial robots from ABB, and enhances an already diverse and impressive portfolio of robotic products. This portfolio includes a comprehensive range of robots for all sectors of industry, as well as robot controllers, software, application equipment and robot peripherals.
